OUR NATIONAL SECURITY AT RISK

As President of the United States and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Donald Trump’s chaotic “leadership” and obsession with his own ego and financial interest have combined to weaken America’s place on the world stage, embolden our enemies, and alienate our allies.  Trump has refused to accept the U.S. Intelligence community’s own conclusion that Russia attacked our democracy in 2016, while cozying up to Putin and spilling classified information to the Russian Ambassador in the Oval Office.  His approach to diplomacy with North Korea has yielded no substantive commitments from the regime, and has centered on a bizarre personal relationship between the two strongmen to include “love letters.”  At the request of Turkey’s President, Trump ordered an unplanned and hasty withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Northern Syria — abandoning our Kurdish partners who fought side-by-side to deny ISIS a physical stronghold, and leaving the Kurds to be slaughtered.  There are countless examples Trump’s erratic behavior on the world stage putting Americans at risk.  But it comes down to this: those who’ve worn the uniform of our country — past and present — deserve a Commander-in-Chief worthy of their service and sacrifice, and all Americans deserve a President who puts our national security first.

  • TRUMP FAMILY FINANCIAL INTERESTS ARE #1

Donald Trump is a carnival-barking huckster. To him, everything is for sale — including our national security.

  • PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT

Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement. The Department of Defense has described climate chnage as a “threat multiplier because it has the potential to exacerbate many of the challenges we are dealing with today — from infectious disease to terrorism.” Trump doesn’t care.

  • TRUMP WRECKED THE IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL

Thanks to years of diligent diplomatic efforts by President Obama, the United States and key allies reached a deal to prevent the Iranian regime from building a nuclear weapon.  That deal was working — right up until Donald Trump tore up the agreement to spite his predecessor and put the United States on the path to all-time high tensions with Iran.

  • TRUMP DESTROYING E.O.D.

The US military has the best explosive experts in the world. Trump is running them ragged — pushing them out of the military and making us less safe.

  • TRUMP LIED ABOUT IRAN THREAT

Donald Trump claimed that Iran was posed and imminent danger to  America as pretext to the assasination of Iranian Gen Qassem Suleimani in a drone strike. It was later found that Trump authorized the operation in June of 2019, and chose to execute the plan to appease GOP senators who he needed to protect him during his impeachment trial. Even Trump’s own defense secretary admitted that there was no tangible threat from Iran when Trump ordered the strike. His actions put U.S. service members and diplomatic staff around the globe in danger.

TRUMP’S ATTACKS ON VETERANS

Donald Trump has disrespected and devalued the service of veterans since the beginning days of his campaign — deriding the late Senator and POW John McCain as “not a real war hero because he was captured” and claiming that avoidance of sexaully-transmitted diseases in New York City in the 80’s was his own “personal Vietnam.” But beyond his disrespect, Trump has also allowed the chaos and corruption core to his Administration to get in the way of caring for our nation’s men and women in uniform — past, present, and future. Trump allowed open warfare between his own political appointees at the White House and the Department of Veterans Affairs to throw the VA — our VA — into chaos, resulting in the firing of his first VA Secretary. Then he tried to nominate his unqualified, personal physician to run the 9,000,000+ patient healthcare system. And throughout, outsiders with financial interests in VA contracts — like the “Mar-A-Lago three” — have been putting profits ahead of patients.

When members of the military are worried that the benefits they earned won’t be there when they separate from the service, they’re not able to fully focus on the mission at hand. Donald Trump undermining the VA therefore hurts our national security.

Here are some of the scandals that Trump has allowed to harm the lives of veterans.

  • MAR-A-LAGO MEMBERS RUNNING THE VA

Donald Trump handed over the future of the VA — our VA — to some of his country club friends.

  • DOCTOR RONNIE

Dr. Ronnie Jackson said the president was in excellent health. For this, Donald Trump nominated him to lead the VA. He was so unqualified, he had to withdraw his nomination.

  • TRUMP LIES ABOUT DONATING TO VETERANS

Donald Trump lies about everything, including donating money to veterans’ charities.

  • CUTS TO CFPB

Predatory lenders target the military. Donald Trump made is easier for them.

  • TRUMP FAILING VA WHISTLEBLOWERS

Trump campaigned on protecting VA whistleblowers and holding those who wrong veterans accountable. He’s failed entirely.

TRUMP HATES MILITARY FAMILIES

Before even taking office, Donald Trump made mocking Gold Star Families a centerpiece of his 2016 presidential campaign.  As President, Trump and Congressional Republicans have doubled down on their attacks against military families and families of the fallen.  From spiking taxes on military death benefits to ripping money away from military school construction funding to pay for his racist wall and devaluing the service of immigrant and LGBTQ service members, Donald Trump has demeaned and degraded military families since day zero.

As morally reprehensible as these attacks are, they also impact the readiness of our force, and takes their attention away from their missions. Donald Trump’s attacks on our military families and service members make us less safe.

  • GOLD STAR ATTACKS

During the 2016 election, President Trump relentlessly and repeatedly attacked the Khan Family whose son, U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, was killed in Iraq and was Muslim.  As President, Trump made a Gold Star Widow feel even worse with his condolence call, and then continued attacking her in the media.

  • TAXING GOLD STAR KIDS

When Trump and Congressional Republicans passed their tax breaks for corporations and billionaires, they also spiked the tax burden on children whose parents were killed in action as service members.  The so-called kiddie tax “applied the tax meant to collect revenue on inheritances and trust funds to several thousand children who had lost their mom or dad to war or service-related injuries or illness.” House Democrats have passed the SECURE Act, which includes a full repeal of the kiddie tax, but Senate Republicans are standing in the way.

  • DISRESPECTING IMMIGRANT SERVICE MEMBERS

Immigrants have served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces in every conflict since the founding days of our nation.  But Donald Trump and the racists in his inner circle have chosen to constantly attack immigrants serving in the military, deport immigrant veterans, service members and family members, and block immigrant troops from earning their citizenship through service.

  • ASSAULT ON TRANSGENDER TROOPS

In a July 2017 tweet, President Trump sidelined thousands of our service members on the sole basis of their gender identity.  The “trans ban” was written at the behest of radical right wing political figures and caught the entire U.S. military and Pentagon leadership off guard.

  • STEALING MONEY FROM MILITARY FAMILIES TO FUND HIS RACIST BORDER WALL

On January 13, 2020, the Washington Post reported that President Trump was preparing to divert an additional $7.2 billion in Pentagon construction and counternarcotics funding to pay for his vanity border wall project. Projects that would lose funding include road repairs, a waste treatment plants and school construction projects on military bases.

WHO’S PAYING FOR TRUMP’S WALL? MILITARY FAMILIES

When Congress refused to appropriate funds for Trump’s racist wall along the U.S.-Mexico border (which experts say is an ineffective waste), the President decided to declare a national emergency and rip the money away from military construction projects already approved by Congress.  These projects, which take years to approve, include critical military projects that directly impact our military’s readiness and the quality of life of military families.  With desperately needed improvements to military schools, childcare facilities, and community projects on the chopping block, military families are paying for Trump’s wall.
